How do I get my laptop to run home assistant?

I am at a screen which has ha > and a flashing cursor but no idea what to do next?

Thanks for the reply but I have typed that after the ha thing but no luck?

As the Onboarding docs state, you type the address into a browser… not into the HAOS command line. It can be any browser (Chrome, Safari, Firefox, etc) on any computer, phone, or tablet on your network.

Hello Gasmancary,

You log in from other devices, it just runs there unless there is something broken.

Ahh ok, so if I type that into a second pc something will happen from there? Sorry total novice trying to learn. Both laptop and 2nd pc will be on Ethernet, is this ok?

Ok, so I have entered the 8123 address what do I do next please?

Remember, we can’t see what’s going on on your screen… You should have been directed to a page that says something like “Preparing Home Assistant”. Is that what are you seeing?

If not, you need to go through the troubleshooting steps: https://www.home-assistant.io/installation/troubleshooting/

Is that on the laptop I installed HA on?

No, on the pc you are using the browser on. Once it’s up and running, you will almost never do anything on the server machine (in this case the laptop)… it should just sit in the corner doing its job.

Ok thanks, so this flashing cursor just stays like that and I set everything up from another source such as my pc? Is there somewhere I can read up on how to integrate my smart home stuff and learn more about it that you recommend please?

IIRC, HAOS should ignore lid/screen closure; so just close the lid and the screen should go to sleep while the rest of the computer stays on.

Once you have gone through the onboarding process alot of your devices should be auto-discovered and integrating them will basically just mean clicking a button that say “Add Device” or something similar. Once you take care of all the auto-discovered stuff then figure out what, if anything, wasn’t picked up and check the integration index in the docs to see if there is a core integration that requires further manual setup.

The official docs are the most complete and up-to-date source. There are tons of videos available on YouTube, but they tend to become outdated pretty quickly.

Ok many thanks will have a go

HA (Home Assistant) runs as a server, meaning: there is not much you can do on it from a user endpoint.
It has no GUI (Graphical User Interface) and only for troubleshooting it can be useful to have a screen on your server.

To use/access/configure HA, you have to use a client with a browser (on any system) or the companion app (on Android or iOS).
By pointing your browser (or the companion app) to http://homeassistant.local:8123 you should see the onboarding screen that @Didgeridrew is referring to.

Home Assistant is a server program. It runs headless on a host computer like a Raspberry Pi or Intel NUC. You can run it on a laptop or tablet PC, but that’s an inefficient waste of resources. Most of us rarely, if ever use the command line on the host PC.

You manage Home Assistant from a browser on the same local network. Any browser.

Yes. your installation is probably running. Just for fun, try typing help.

Different laptops work differently, and this is sometimes something you can set in the BIOS. I have one that goes into deep sleep and I can’t SSH into it when the lid is closed.
