How does homeassistant.local map to the IP address of the device?

I’m perplexed how homeassistant.local maps to the IP of the device without me having added any DNS entires on my router or in my Hosts file on my mac. I’m sure it’s simple but I"m curious how it does this? It works on most of my devices but not my android phone.
