How is http://homeassistant:8123 made discoverable?

The only reason I ask is I’ve bought a travel router and I’ve been playing with OpenVPN tunnel back to my Synology home router. It works and I can access my home files. But when I type homeassistant:8123 it doesn’t find it, presumably because of the DNS function. I tried entering my home DNS in the VPN config as follows:
dhcp-option 192.168.1.1
But homeassistant:8123 is still not working. I can type in the IP manually so no big deal, but was just curious.

That address is resolved through MDNS. Not traditional DNS. If your VPN doesn’t pass MDNS requests it won’t resolve the name.
