How many simultaneous users does Home Assistant support? I want to use Home Assistant to operate the gate of my community, and we are approximately 200 users. Is it possible to create that many users in HA?

regars!

I’ve searched everywhere and can’t seem to find a clear answer: How many simultaneous users does Home Assistant support? I want to use Home Assistant to operate the gate of my community, and we are approximately 200 users. Is it possible to create that many users in HA?

You probably can’t find the answer for this because 200 users in Home Assistant is a very special use case. You could try creating the users yourself, see if you hit any limit. I’m guessing there’s more suited solutions for a 200 user system than HA though. What hardware are you planning to run on? You might run into limitations there as well.

If there are 200 users, it is highly unlikely they will use it simultaneously. If they have the app, they may have simultaneous background connections, but they would not storm the gate together, HA open in hand. But there is likely no experience with this, so it is hard to tell how it will behave.

However, Home Assistant is scalable in the sense that you can opt to have several home assistant instances, each serving a subset of users. If you roll out gradually, you can monitor HA to see when a new instance is advisable.

For the common devices, I would recommend letting one of the instances expose the devices to a MQTT server (if it is not MQTT already), and have all other Home Assistant instances subscribe.

Hi Mario, this is a uncommon scenario and I’m very curious about the feasibility of your idea.
Will you use HA just for the gate and is there any particular reason why you want to use HA for this?

I have helped a friend some time ago with the control of a motorized gate.
We simply found a RF controlled relay with 3 remotes online for about 25$ which does the job…

You could simply try to create 200 users on a test HA system - physical or virtual - that’s the easy part.
Tip: if you use the companion app, limit the number of exposed sensors to minimum.
Should you go ahead with HA, please share your findings.
