How to configure area of a device that spans multiple areas

I am starting to tag all of my devices with the appropriate areas – a fantastic feature that I can see will only continue to be more useful in the future. The problem I am encountering is that the logic seems to assume that a device can only be in a single area.

While this is true for basic devices, I have 2 specific examples that do not fit. I have an alarm device, where each of its sensors is in a different room (front door, basement motion, bedroom window…). However, since all the sensors are under a single device, there is not way to tag these appropriately. Similarly, my Ecowitt weather device has multiple entities associated with it. Some of these are actually temp/humidity sensors that I have placed around my house. Again, I would like to be able tag the individual entities/sensors with a separate area.

Is there any way to customize this right now or do I need to wait for some future update?

many thanks,
J.

You have more confidence in this that I do.
I’ve never found a use for it…

I suggest Labels instead. You can assign multiple labels to a thing to do this.

You can set different areas to the entities of a device.

There have been discussions to allow hierarchy in areas but that was rejected. The floors they provided instead do not provide the same possibilities hierarchical areas would have unfortunately.

Labels are the stopgap, but to be honest, hving labels do all sorts of stuff can easily turn those into an hard to mnge mess too.

If you click the more-info of the entity, then the cog, you can switch off “Use Device Area” and change it to whatever area you want
