How to Put a Zigbee Device in Pairing Mode: Complete Guide

What is Zigbee Pairing Mode?

In the world of home automation, Zigbee technology is one of the most popular technologies for connecting smart devices. However, for these devices to be able to communicate with each other and with a central controller, it is necessary to put them in Zigbee Pairing Mode . This mode allows the device to be detected and paired with the system.

Why is Pairing Mode Necessary?

Zigbee Pairing Mode is crucial because:

  • Allows Initial Configuration: It is the first step to integrate a Zigbee device into your smart home network.
  • Facilitates Communication: Ensures that the device can communicate with the central controller and other Zigbee devices.
  • Resolves Connection Issues: Helps resolve issues when a device disconnects or loses its settings.

Challenges When Putting a Device in Pairing Mode

Getting a device into Zigbee Pairing Mode can be complicated due to the variety of methods used by manufacturers. Below are some of the most common ways to activate this mode on different Zigbee devices.

Common Ways to Activate Zigbee Pairing Mode

  1. Reset button:
  • Many Zigbee devices have a small reset button. Pressing and holding this button for several seconds usually activates Pairing Mode.
  1. On/Off Sequence:
  • Some devices require them to be turned on and off multiple times in a specific sequence to enter Pairing Mode.
  1. Mobile apps:
  • Some devices can be put into Pairing Mode through a manufacturer-specific mobile application.
  1. Button Combination:
  • On certain devices, pressing a specific combination of buttons activates Pairing Mode.
  1. Remote control:
  • Some Zigbee lighting devices can be put into Pairing Mode using a dedicated remote control.

Lighting Devices: A Special Case

Zigbee lighting devices, such as light bulbs and LED strips, present a particular challenge since they typically do not have buttons. Here we show you how to put them in Zigbee Pairing Mode :

  1. On/Off Sequence:
  • The most common way is to turn the light on and off in a specific sequence, usually 3-5 times, until the light flashes indicating it is in Pairing Mode.
  • One of the most common Paring mode or Pairing Mode for Zigbee lighting : quick on and off 5 times: On-Off On-Off On-Off On-Off On
  • Another Paring mode option for many devices is : 10 Seconds Off, 2 seconds on, 5 Seconds Off, 2 seconds on, 5 Seconds Off and on again
  1. Smart Wall Switches:
  • Some wall switches may have a small reset button or a combination of long and short presses of the switch.

Manual Method: Connecting Reset Pin to Ground

In some cases, especially with more advanced devices or when the above methods do not work, it may be necessary to activate Pairing Mode manually through the device’s electronics. Here’s how to do it:

Step by Step to Activate Pairing Mode Manually

  1. Identify the Pins:
  • Locate the reset and ground pins on the device board. This generally requires opening the case of the device, in order to see the exact model of the modem and search for its documentation and be able to identify them. Attached example for the ZTU model
  1. Prepare the Device:
  • Disconnect it from the power before handling its electronics to avoid any risk. Uncover the device until you can physically access the modem, since we are going to work on it.
  1. Connect the Pines:
  • Use a conductive wire to connect the reset pin (18) with the ground pin (GDN). This may require a tool such as a small screwdriver to maintain contact.
  1. Maintain Connection:
  • Hold this connection for a few seconds. Typically, the device will have an LED indicator that will flash to indicate that it has entered Pairing Mode.
  1. Test the Connection:
  • Once the device is in Pairing Mode, remove the cable and verify on your Zigbee controller that the device is detected.

Conclusion

Putting a device in Zigbee Pairing Mode is an essential step to integrate any device into your home automation network and exploit it with your favorite application, here you already know that we like Zigbee2Mqtt , here is a link to the project website in case you are interested in www.zigbee2mqtt.io Although it can be a complicated process due to the different methodologies used by manufacturers, knowing the various ways to do it will allow you to solve these challenges effectively. Whether it’s through reset buttons, on/off sequences, or even connecting pins manually, being prepared for these tasks will help you keep your smart home running smoothly.

Hi, is there any documentation on how zigbee device pairing works in home assistant? specifically I would like to understand the zigbee security config that would allow all kinds of zigbee devices to join the zigbee network under HA.

I understand that there is a network key (hop-by-hop encryption) and an APS/trust center link key (end-to-end) which would need to be identically configured in both the coordinator and end devices (and routers if any).

I found the answer in an old post XBee serial communication - #16 by Shulyaka

A default global trust center link key defined by the ZigBee Alliance has the ASCII hex value of 5A 69 67 42 65 65 41 6C 6C 69 61 6E 63 65 30 39, or the equivalent string “ZigBeeAlliance09”.
