How to run Google Assistant in Home Assistant?

Hello there,

I am fairly new to Home Assistant, and while I have got it up and running on my Raspberry Pi 3B (I installed hassbian, not using hass.io), I simply have not been able to figure out the following:

I want to run Google Assistant on my Raspi. I want it to act like a Google Home, i.e. I want it to react to the hotword, let me say something, and react to it.

My issue here is that the documentation on the Home Assistant website only covers this for hass-io (under https://home-assistant.io/addons/google_assistant/) but not for a hassbian installation, and even after doing hours of searching both generally on Google as well as here in the forums, I have not been able to find any kind of explanation that points me in the right direction.

Can someone explain to me what I have to do, or link me to a sensible and comprehensible website explaining it?

That would be very much appreciated!

The google assistant component in home assistant allows you to link to a google Assistant (google home/mini/max) device. What you want is to turn your raspi into a google assistant device which is different to what the component for home assistant is there to achieve. You will first need to setup your raspi to run as a google assistant device then configure the component to link to it.

I know. That is exactly what I wrote. I am very much aware that the Google Assistant component is not what I want.

However, there is a Google Assistant add-on for hass.io that would do what I want. Only I am not using that, I am using a hassbian installation.

Indeed. That is exactly what I wrote. How do I do that?

First couple of things that came up on google. Whether you can install this seemless alongside your current hassbian pi setup is something I can’t answer as I use docker similar to what hass.io uses for its addons.
