How to start, and how portable are things?

Okay, after a few false starts I’m wanting to build a proper system as part of new year’s resolution of sorts.

I have used various Pi’s in the past, and to get started I’ll probably go that route, as I have a few hanging around.
But I want this to be reliable and wife-friendly, so I’m considering getting one of the hardware kits like Green or Yellow, to make things easier. But I’m not really sure what the difference is.

My main question is – if I set up something on a Pi, and want to try let’s say Yellow, am I setting up everything from scratch again, or can I just copy/import the configs over? Similar question from like let’s say Yellow to Green?

I’m going to do the research on the hardware options themselves, just not sure how easy or hard moving configs between devices might be.

Thanks!

If you’re installing/running HAOS it is as simple as back up the old, restore backup on the new.

This right here.

I just did it. Decomissioned an old ESXi server and installed HAOS in Proxmox on a new server. The startup process of HAOS gives the option to restore. Went fast and perfect.

Okay, so today I learned that there is a kind of linux distro called HAOS, and that helps.

I did notice it says it can be run in containers, as well as on SBCs. My plan for now is to outfit a Pi with it, so now I have to figure out how to get HAOS installed on a Pi.

I’ll post progress as I make it; thanks for the direction!

Hi, have you seen this overview: Installation - Home Assistant

If you are going to use a pi, consider using an external SSD, rather than the native pi sd card, for storage. The SSD will be more stable over the long term.
