How to use Broadlink RM mini 3 as IR sensor to trigger automations

Hi all,

I successfully learned all my different IR remotes with the Broadlink Integration and my RM mini 3.
I was wondering, if I can use the Broadlink RM mini 3 as a sensor, to check if a button on a remote got pressed and then use this as a trigger action in an automation.

To clarify what I want to do:

  • I’ve a Beamer to which I need to send the On/Off (done via the RM mini 3)
  • I’ve a Hifi to which I need to send the On/Off command and select the correct Input (done via the RM mini 3)
  • I’ve a Fire TV control to control what I want to see

The Fire TV also sends IR Signals for Power On/Off, Volume Up/Down and Mute.
I want to use these Fire TV Remote IR Buttons (Power; Volume Up/Down and Mute) as a trigger to run the scripts for the Hifi and Beamer.

Currently I only found the “learn” Service. Is there a possibility to check whether an already learned code was received by the RM mini 3?

Thanks in advance!

Hi, unless I am mistaken I believe that universal remotes (of which the RM Mini 3 is one) can only learn specific commands when in learning mode and then resend them. They are not intended to function as “always on” receiving devices for IR.

You may be able to use the HACS Alexa Media Player Integration to monitor for changes in the state of the Fire TV then use these as triggers in Automations to send the required IR codes via the RM Mini 3.

Thanks Jonah for the quick reply.
I already feared that this always on option would not be possible. I’ll check your suggestion using the HACS Plugin, however I want to reuse old IR remotes to control more stuff, thus I would need something with an alwys on receiving option.

I checked with the ESPHome project, there it seems I coulds build my own IR receiver and have binary sensors for the single remote keys.
