HP Thin Client T510 - works like a charm

Just want to write in here that I got HP Thin Client T510 with 16gigs of flash storage and it works pretty well.
Installation is pretty simple:
Get Ubuntu Server 64bit ISO
Rufus - flash onto USB disk
Connect wired network on TC
Boot the usb disk on ThinClient
Install Ubuntu to internal 16GB
(Enable SSH server install when asked)
Reboot
Install HA Supervised vis this

After that I’ve rebooted again and all works like a charm.
Did restore my last backup from my old i stance running in Virtualbox until now and all works well. And faaaaast.

Did something similar, couple different ways actually with a Dell Wyze terminal (more less just to see if I could).

WinPE boot USB with Etcher and HA OS img wrote to EMMC (kinda of frowned at the 16 GB tho as for a long term install space may become an issue depending on what your doing), this system also supports an M2 SSD so I installed a 120 GB and same procedure to that. Both ways worked well for HA OS full system install.

Also did Debian approved method install to the SSD, and with this system and small foot print it looks like a nice alternative to have in the toolbox should I need it…

I’ve got 3 gigs free space after restoring my backup into the device, so in my case I should be fine. Didn’t have any small working SSD at home (and the SATA extension cable), otherwise I would swap the SATA flash module for 64 or 128GB SSD.

I’m also thinking to buy a Thin Client for HA. So how’s the performance on HP T510 now? Did you ran into any issues with installation or upgrade?

@Kokesh I am curious if you are runnig the T510 headless (remote, without monitor/key)?

I am currently installing the T520, although it works great. Once I disconnect the monitor and reboot it will not start. I am struggling quite a bit on getting it to run without a monitor. Cant change anything in the bios, the only solution I have found online is using a dummy VGA plug to fake a monitor. I’d prefer a software fix though. Curious about your solution.

Hello @Sebex1,

I actually have T520 running home assistant without problem and without need of a monitor.
When I received it from ebay, it doesn’t work but after some try in the bios, I run into a working T520 without monitor.

I’m not completly sure of the config to make it work because I change a lot of config that seems normal to me when I receive the thin client and I was able to boot without monitor after my first configuration. Maybe the fact of set force the amount of RAM used for GPU (From AUTO to 32M).

Keep my updated if you need help,

This got me excited…I just swapped out four t520 thin clients for real pc’s and have been looking at them for a while now. I think I know what to with them now
When I find time i’ll start fiddling and will make sure to do a write up!

Thank you for the instructions.
Did you need a monitor connected, or can you do this headless?

I run HAOS on a HP T630. To install Proxmox I connected a monitor and keyboard.
After that, I put it in the electrical cabinet only connected to power and ethernet. Installing HAOS and other stuff can be done via the proxmox webui remotely. No need for monitor and/or keyboard after the initial proxmox install.
