Hunter Douglas PowerView Gen 3 integration

I did an original port to Gen 3 months ago, but it is still not in. I’m about to go on a vacation for a couple of weeks, so if this isn’t in by beginning of August I’ll make a custom integration. Unfortunately, I don’t have time left in July to do it.

In the future, I’ve learned my lesson that things cannot get through a PR in a reasonable amount of time with HA and I’ll go right to a custom integration. I have a lot more to say on this, but probably should just leave it at that.

I still run it on my development container, but it is a pain to switch to that just to use my blinds.

Sure, but I mean is it possible to use BLE directly with HA without the hub.

No, not possible with BLE directly without the hub. The integration relies entirely on the hub/gateway to communicate.

I would also be interested to know if this is possible. My phone and a physical remote control can interact with my shutters without a hub, why not HA?

I’ve also got a Gen 3 hub and can’t get HA to connect to it. It just says, “Failed to connect.” Would be happy to test, etc., if this progresses to that point.

Any progress?

PR#29 was merged and there’s now a v3.0.0 of aiopvapi
I believe the next step is to get usage merged in to HA here: Powerview gen3 base requirements by kingy444 · Pull Request #98438 · home-assistant/core · GitHub which it looks like @Kingy444 is actively working on.

I do wish I could have gotten things moving a bit quicker - unfortunately personal life got in the way, then work life - now finding some time for you guys

All code for v3 is written and will just be a matter of getting the PR’s through the required review now. Work from @alindner19 was a huge help getting v3 underway, that led to a rewrite of most of v2 too aswell. Good news is if we every have a v4 the foundations are there for that now

If anyone has more money then sense (or just generally appreciative), there are a lot of long nights involved and always happy to accept a donation to the cause

Good work.Thank you. Do you know if this will work with the Gen 3 wireless gateways or only the more expensive ethernet one.

As I understand it, it should work fine with either gateway.

Looks like it’s still not merged into the integration. Any update on that? Thanks!

The process into core can be a long one unfortunately - some of the fires in the USA haven’t helped the review timeline either.

Is there a way to use this as a custom integration in HA while waiting for the ver. 3 changes to be published?

+1 interested party.

I have a house full of Gen2 blinds that are slowly deteriorating due to age. It’s getting harder and harder to get them repaired or replaced, and they keep telling me that I’ll have to switch to Gen3 at some point, and replace all the shades.

I really don’t want to do that until the HA integration for Gen3 is in.

If I am reading this thread correctly, it sounds like the API is understood, the code is written and waiting to go in. It will require a gen3 hub. Can’t do BLE directly from HA to the blinds. And there is the option of using homekit or custom hackery in the short term while waiting for the PRs. Is that a fair summary?

Any other things I should know before I decide to switch the whole house from Gen2 to Gen3?

I’ve added Powerview integration to Google Home, no choice really, so I don’t have any control through HA. So my automations are through the Powerview app, or more often I simply speak “Hey Google, close bedroom blinds”.

If you look at the github repo, it’s pretty actively being worked on, in terms of merging in gen3. However, it did seem to hit a pause a couple weeks ago. Not sure if there are some coins we can drop in a fountain or something like that to make it go a bit faster… I’m really “needing” this integration.

I am beginning to think that maybe if I am ever forced off of Gen2, I will probably switch to a different shade company. The HD PV setup was super expensive and never really worked reliably, and with Gen3 support lagging, I think it is just another warning sign for me to get off the HD train.

Or you could switch to OpenHAB

Sorry, I wasn’t trying to suggest that I was unhappy with HA or its devs… On the contrary, I’m loving HA.

It’s the physical blinds, the hub, and Hunter Douglass in general that are the letdown for me. I’m sure the HA Gen3 support will be great. It’s just the way that HD is handling the switch from Gen2 to Gen3 is off putting in a way that I don’t see with other blinds companies. The higher price for the HD blinds just does not feel justified. As the blinds in my house slowly break over time, I just keep thinking that the grass must be greener on the other side of the fence.

Same. I am hoping for an integration soon!
