I am lost with my HA configuration

Dear folks,

I am in a middle of a huge issue that I can not solve with my HA.

I am not very PC savvy but I try to figure out how to configure my HA.

I just bought a house and I am lucky that there is a HA with KNX protols which controls the lights, temperature and blinds around the house.

It works perfectly, I can access it on my phone, there is a small panel on the wall etc.

I tried adding an automation on my blinds and when I saved it, it was not appearing in my automations. I tried few times, every time I press save the automation nothing happens.

By reading on the forum I found out that most likely the “automation: !include automations.yaml” is missing from the configuration file.

I tried accessing the configuration file by the Studio Server code add on only to get this message:

This redirect is not supported by your Home Assistant installation. It needs either the Home Assistant Operating System or Home Assistant Supervised installation method. For more information, see the documentation."

So I tried all the other ways to access the config file unsuccessfully.

I don’t have add ons, the system can not to redirects. I am at a loss on what to do.

How can I access the system? I didn’t install HA myself, it came with the house. I already tried calling few electricians and none are capable on setting it up for me. The HA seems to be installed in a small PC connected to the internet router, I found out its IP address but I can not find a way how to access it.

What can I do here? Shall I back up the system and reinstall it on a fresh HA installation and reverting it to it? Will it include all the current KNX lights, valves, blinds?

Thank you for any suggestion. It’s a pity not to make use the most out of the system.

Kind regards

Hi !
It looks like you are running the Container version of HA eg. in Docker. You can find out here Open your Home Assistant instance and show your repairs. at the 3-dot menu in the upper right corner → Information…

This may actually be a good idea. You can move to Home Assistant Operating System then. The configuration should be included in the backup.

But be aware that there may be other things, besides HA, running on that machine that you may or may not miss when they are gone.

Maybe just try to attach a screen and keyboard to that PC and see if you can get access.

Thank you very much for your help.

I tried opening the link but won’t work.

From what I can see in the settings the version I have is Home Assistant 2022.4.2

I just plugged a monitor into the small NUC computer and all I get it is a Ubuntu terminal with no graphics interface. No idea what I can do next?

I would start from scratch with a HAOS installation. Call a tech-savvy friend over and buy some beers if you feel it is out of your league  That way you get a fresh start with the functionality you want and you are sure the previous owner does not have access.

I agree 100%

Multiple reasons.

  1. you did not build it and have no idea what’s on it.

HA when fully configured is very powerful and you give it access to a lot of stuff. Maybe Amazon maybe Google or your health data from Runkeeper who knows. But even with recent changes designed to improve security between addons - any integration running in HA core has access to everything ELSE running in core.

Do you want unknown code running on that box that has access to that kind of stuff?

No you don’t. Nobody does.

But that’s exactly your condition and why I will NEVER transfer a running HA install to another person except in cases where I were performing work for them under contract. I will also not accept a running installation into my network if I didn’t SEE it being installed or put together by someone I have a contract with.(liability issues)

  1. supportability. You are new to this and there’s a steep curve. Your install method is an advanced one. So even if you find someone to do this once. What’s next?

An event yesterday reinforced to the entire community how important it is to have a good tested backup of your system. Do you know how to do that?

HAOS is by far the easiest way to start if you’re new. Start reading and when comfortable… Wipe and reload from new. Don’t restore anything for the box.

One thing I forgot to add: Document what integrations are running on the system now so that you have something to reference if you start from scratch.

Thank you all for your suggestions.

I think I will try a fresh installation over one weekend and start from scratch.

Do you think if I do a backup of my configuration how it is at the moment and I simply restore it on a new system it will recognize all the integrations that are currently running?

A restore is not starting from scratch and carries forward all previous baggage. If you were going to do that you could continue on what you have now.

Mark down what integrations you use make sure you have all the correct credentials you will need and once you have all of it. Start new and install everything you need by hand.
