I’m trying to improve my presence detection. Right now I’m using OwnTracks HTTP with decent results, but I would like better. I’ve played with iBeacons over the past year or so some, but haven’t ever found the right implementation I guess.
It seems there are two basic ways to use iBeacons. I is to tell your phone (OwnTracks or other software) where you are so it (your phone) can tell HA were you are. The other is to have the iBeacon recognize when you come into the area and tell HA you are here.
My question is what is the best way to go and how do you set it up? Right now, I have OwnTracks, so I’m tending to lean in that direction, but it would be nice to have a smart device that looks for a tile and tells HA who is here based on recognizing the tile, not necessarily the phone. What do yall think?
I just read the documentation on Owntracks and iBeacons.
I have some Beacons available from another project, so I will give this a try tomorrow.
Now, from past experience, with the beacons I had, they are quite the battery consumers…so lets see how it goes.
I might contact the company I bought the beacons to get some info on how to safe batteries.
