Ideas for using NFC tags

I just want to get some inspiration from the community using the new nfc tags.

I will start:

  1. NFC music cards (classic)
    Printed cards on a wall.
Play specific playlist when holding against Cardreader.

  2. Cooking Tags
Scan tag and open recipe on your Google Home Display and start playing cooking playlist.
Not sure how to accomplish that right now.

Let’s not get into details, just ideas.

As for the music you can probably do the same with your movies and/or audio books.

(Sleepy Time Script) I have one next to my bedroom door. When I go to bed at the end of the day and initiate the scan, it shuts off my main sitting area lights/tv, locks my door, turns on my porch lights, starts robot vacuum, turns on motion detection within the home that does push notifications if triggered and sets the temperature on the thermostat. My wife thinks I am super lazy. :joy:

Hey Guys!

I love your ideas this is great.

I already connected a tag with my „go to bed“ automation

Another one I put on my table when I come home just checkin with this tag and the music turns on, light on (if in the evening) roller blinds up during the day.

I mean there is no difference in checkin by tag or making a click in the homeassistant app (or even with device tracker)
but this way cooler :grinning:

I think you are not lazy.
To be lazy you should trigger this with a button on the bed so you do not have to turn on your phone.

The next level laziness is doing this when your smartphone is connected to a charger

But honestly, most usecases would be accomplished way better by a button.

Any ideas about tag specific things?

Yeah there is too many “iftt’s” in my world for the charger scenario. Also, I agree it would be nicer to just have a button. I thought about that already but for a button I would personally want to put in a more central location to do other tasks for a group setting. Plus the cost of that button. Got a bag of 25 tags for $10 vs get a single button for $20. I assuming they have gotten cheaper buttons since I last looked.

I set a tag near my desk that turns on light to red in the main room/broadcasts a tts message on my devices when i am in a meeting in the office. Another one to mute notifications on my phone and plays music when I am working.

I began ordering parts to add a scanner to an outdoor access gate that leads to a back door. My family currently uses this gate to come and go. It has a simple keypad and electric access lock, but the lock can be unlocked with a simple dry contact.

My plan is to add a tag reader and a few relays at the gate that way i can now remotely control access there. I can then extend access to the rest of my home (I also have a zwave lock and my alarm can be disarmed via esphome) based on the tag.

First one on my list is the cleaning lady. I can give her access via a tag instead of giving her codes to my gate, door lock, and alarm. I can then easily restrict access using that tag to times of day that make sense. If she bails, then i can easily disable the tag altogether.

I have a bunch of family that lives nearby too. Giving them tags makes it easy to give them controlled access without the risk of my codes getting out into the open.

I put an NFC sticker on the outside garage door keypad. Scanning it toggles the overhead door.

I have a Zigbee color E12 bulb in my drink fridge and leave the light switch always on. The only way to toggle the light is using the app, or Alexa. I put a NFC sticker on the fridge door that now toggles the light .

I’d like to use tags to check off that I took my medicine & remind me when I don’t.
Also to count how many times the cats go through the door.
