I recently bought a bunch of IKEA INSPELNING plugs since they are phasing out their Zigbee line. I noticed that one of the two plugs that we were putting into use was rattling as if there was something loose in the plug. Rather than just returning it, I decided to open it for science. It turned out that there is a pretty big loose solder ball between the back of the plug (mains prong side) and the back of the PCB
.
Given the size of the solder ball it could easily have wreaked havoc (shorts) if the plug was used on its side or upside down, since it could have shorted 230V connections.
I am surprised that this was not caught in QA, I would have expected them to do solder joint inspections and shake tests after closing the plug.
At any rate, you may want to shake your INSPELNING plugs a bit before you put them in use for extra QA. (Yes, I have e-mailed IKEA’s product safety department.)
