Ikea trådfri or xiaomi yeelight

TRÅDFRI Gateway, white $29.99 + TRÅDFRI LED bulb E26 1000 lumen, wireless dimmable, warm white globe opal
$11.99 xiaomi yeelight cost 11.89$

If xiaomi yeelight can use with home assistant with out Gateway why pay for trådfri gateway and bulb.
Trådfri gateway + bulb 41.98 $
Xiaomi yeelight 11.89$

I have both. The IKEA is much brighter than Yeelight. For a ceiling lamp, one yeelight is usually not enough (I use two).
Also, if you use a zigbee device directly (like a ConBee), you can control the IKEA light without going trough Wifi.

Just to confirm…the Xiaomi Yeelight bulbs will not work in the US right?

To set up the Tradfri gateway you need one of the remote dimmers too which ups your cost even further.

Thanks ! i didn’t know.

Yes they work. i have some. For the RGB, I had to buy a converter 110v/220v just to setup the wifi. Once done, the converter is not needed. For the yeelight mono (white) or the phillips xiaomi lights, no converter was needed to set them up.

Just to confirm, https://us.gearbest.com/smart-light-bulb/pp_278478.html works in the US without any hub and conversion?

Also, what kind of converter did you use for the RGB bulbs?

I have had 7 of these lights (5 white 2 RGB) and none have required an adapter to get started. That being said they are not designed for 120/110V. They are clearly marked on the web page and the bulb itself as 220V.

The white bulbs are a rather white/blue light, closer to a cool bulb from home depot rather than a soft white bulb. This is the one advantage to the Ikea bulbs, they can change temperature. From cool white to a very warm yellow/orange.

The yeelights do require a ‘cloud’ connection to setup initially and will continue to phone home frequently. This can be blocked in your router settings (most likely) and they will still work with HA for control, but the App will no longer work.

I have had a lot of issues with the Ikea hub disconnecting. However I have a dimmer switch that we use to control them and works nicely. I need to update my python version to test the hub with the latest HA and see if its more reliable now.

There is my thoughts on the two options.

These lights worked out of the box with the app. For the RGB, I bought a step up convertor. If I remember correctly it is a sirman ac-100. Try it without the convertor first. For me, it was the only way to configure them because I was not able to make the wifi connection, the light was always rebooting.

You can just buy rgb Yeelights even if you only want white, they have separate white with colour temp control to the rgb part, that’s how I use mine. The white only version isn’t great as you say.

Xiaomi phillips lights is another option also. Whatever suits your needs.
