Ikea tradfri signal repeater

I read that I could use this device to extend zigbee devices that are spotty in range from the ha computer with the zigbee radio. When I plug them in, I see it is flashing and ready to pair but I can’t seem to pair it. Am I doing something incorrectly? There are no buttons on the device. Some people have shown them paired as part of their zha-map graph.

I’ve paired mine using the deCONZ integration. It took a while to pair and it’s now showing up in the lights section in Phoscon, and as a device in HA.
There is actually a tiny hole on the device with the pairing button behind that you can press using a paper clip.

Yea, I got the Tradfri repeater just for that purpose. Some of my devices were just shy out of range from my CC2531 USB Zigbee Dongle.

If you have the Zigbee2mqtt Hass.io Add-on, you will need to set permit_join: to true. After a few seconds, zigbee2mqtt should pick it up in devices.yaml.

How long did you hold the recessed pin hole for it to be in pairing mode? The instructions only say that this is for resetting the device, not for pairing.

About 5 secs for the Ikea E1746 repeater.

Hi guys,

Riding onto this thread, I have recently purchased 3 Tradfri Signal Repeaters as well.
When pairing it using Z2M there wasnt any issues after poking the reset hole. My Z2M was able to pick them up immediately.

Sharing a screenshot of my 3 Repeaters, i notice the LQI are all both showing 51.
Is this behavior normal, as I have placed the repeaters in various parts of my flat.

@thanasegar Did you ever find out an answer to your question? I’m thinking of getting a few of these to build out a zigbee network with Home Assistant.

The Ikea Repeaters are good. At first it was showing low LQI but its important to ensure that the Zigbee channel doesnt interfere with your Wifi AP channels.

So mine had some interference and it was showing low LQI but after changing the channel the quality has improved.

If you are looking to build your zigbee network, its best to go for those Zigbee Bulbs from Ikea range, since these powered devices can act as repeater for your Zigbee Network.

The reason for me to get this, as i am using wifi bulbs so this was the option for me to go to extend my zigbee network range.

How does it work? I looked up the manual online of that repeater, it tells you how to pair the repeater to the zigbee commander stick.

After that, do I pair the devices to the Ikea repeater or simply discover them near my server and will the repeater just relay the signal even if the device was paired to for example the Sonoff stick directly?

You still pair the device with your Zigbee stick, and the repeater should help relaying the communication.

Is there a particular reason to buying the repeater when other devices such as smart plugs also serve the same purpose and can actually be used for something useful.

Not that I know of … and that is why my repeaters are (almost) all plugs

Apologies for the resurrection but I thought it might be useful for future readers…

I use Zigbee2MQTT with a Sonoff USB Coordinator and found that I definitely had to reset the repeater before it would pair. Push a pin into the little hole for 5 seconds and then remove it. You should see the white LED start flashing afterwards.

The reason I got this is that the plugs I got did not work well as repeaters and this seems to have a good rep.

These are the plugs I tried Amazon.co.uk (Woolley Zigbee 3.0 Smart Plug). The signal (LQI) to them was weak and devices would drop off them after a day.

Were there any tricks to pairing the Ikea repeater? I’m not having any success.

I have the Sonoff Plus set up as a coordinator. I’ve tried 3 different Ikea repeaters setup very close to the coordinator after holding the reset pin for 5 seconds. I see the reset flash, and made sure to “allow all join” in the zigbee2mqt addon. But I never see the device being found. The repeaters were previously paired to the Ikea hub, so not sure if that is causing the issue.

Took me about ten goes at resetting to pair before it worked…

I share my experience with setting up the IKEA Tradfri Repeater under ZHA (SkyConnect Stick): some months ago, my first trials were not successful. While the light was slowly pulsating after plugging it in, HA did not recognize it.
I tried by sticking a toothpick or similar into the small hole for several seconds, but nothing happened. Almost returned it (but rather forgot it in a pile of other boxes, devices and cables…).

But today I managed to couple it and while HA was certainly updated in between, I think the trick was to use a fine needle to reach the microswitch inside the device through the pretty small hole. I now think that my previous attempts just failed because I used a too thick pick. Maybe helpful for someone…

To share my experience with this device:

I just plugged my IKEA Tradfri Repeater (CB10 / 104.004.08) in, started discovery using ZHA and my Sonoff ZBDongle-P and pressed the microswitch behind the tiny hole on the Repeater using a needle, for 10 seconds.
After letting go, the light on the repeater flashed softly and after some seconds, it was discovered by ZHA.

I am planning to buy 3 (or 4) of these with the USB plug as I’ve been fighting with my neighbor’s Wifi channel for a month now. I’ve learned a lot in this fight. I do have a few smart plugs and bulbs. But the plugs are weak as repeaters as they are not native ZigBee 3.0 but some Tuya flavor. The light bulbs are good but are hard to find place to install as people tend to use the dump switch and turn them off. Having a USB plug is always useful in any room. One question for those of you who have the USB plug version and ZHA. Can you please see in if they are natively supported without what ZHA calls a Quirk. For example the plugs I have show this in ZigBee Device Info: Quirk: zhaquirks.tuya.ts011f_plug.Plug. If its good ZigBee 3.0 compliant it will not have a Quirk listed.

I can’t actually see anything in mine that reference a Quirk. Here’s my details for one of mine under Device Info:
IEEE: 4c:5b:b3:ff:fe:0f:28:da
Nwk: 0x334b
Device Type: Router
LQI: 200
RSSI: -61
Last seen: 2024-03-06T20:35:48
Power source: Mains

I bought 3 of them earlier this afternoon and added them pretty much immediately after getting them out of the box via ZHA without issue.

My own research and experience suggests that Wi-fi can be a significant issue; also I didn’t notice much of an improvement simply by adding more zigbee repeaters.

I sat down, mapped out my and neighbours’ Wi-fi usage and changed my own wi-fi and zigbee channels to reduce interference. It is a pain to re-pair all zigbee devices one at a time - but my network has been stable in the couple of years since.
