I'm looking for something that can unlatch a door

If this is the wrong category I apologize, and I’ll be happy to post it elsewhere.

I live in a house with a fully enclosed door at the top of a flight of stairs, and it can be a real pain to carry laundry or boxes up and have to open that door with nowhere to set things down. I’ve already put a motion sensor on the stairs to turn on the light so I don’t have to fumble for the switch with my hands full, but now I’m completely stuck trying to figure out how to automatically unlatch the door. I found some hinge springs that will push the door open at least enough that it won’t re-latch right away, but can’t seem to find any door knob that will automatically unlatch, or even a DIY project to do it. Anyone done this before, or have any ideas? I might could cram an esp32 and a servo into the latch hole, but I don’t know if I could with the inside handle still attached.

In the realm of KISS, what about swapping the knob for a non-latching closet knob and just swap the door hinges to some self-close ones?

It sounds like you’re looking for an electric strike. It’s a mechanism that replaces the strike (the metal part on the door frame that the latch engages with) with one that can open and close. Presumably it’s easy enough to run one with an off-the-shelf relay.

FriedCheese’s suggestion is a good one, too.

Perhaps some pictures of the door mechanism would help?
