Is there something like the Shelly PM Mini that is UL approved (and available in the US)? Or a regular, non-switched outlet with wifi power monitoring (or even zwave, I’m using both)?
I don’t want plug-in, I don’t want non-UL approved for anything like this (insurance issues concern me if something happened). I have a bunch of TopGreener outlets but they only monitor the switched outlet and for something like a fridge I worry about reboots not properly restoring power, though that is where I may land on this.
Anyone know a regular duplex outlet (US, 110v, 15A) with built in power monitor, or something like the Shelly, that is HA compatible, local only (+/- setup) and UL approved?
I noticed that. I just bought an older house with small boxes, I THINK the PM Mini will fit inside them, I’m not sure the 1PM will. Plus if I’m reading it right, the 1PM always has the relay in line so a failure of software or hardware might leave the output turned off. Was hoping for pure measurement (my current need is for a fridge, I want to monitor power so if continual draw it alarms that a door is open (or similar) but a bad failure mode would be no power.
But I’m starting to think I can’t have all these things at once.
Another option would be to use a Shelly EM or similar monitor at the breaker panel. I’m guessing the fridge is not the only thing on that circuit but maybe you could create an automation that knows when the fridge is drawing power too long.
Yeah, I actually have two complete IotaWatt systems for in-panel wiring, but the wiring here is such a train wreck I have not tackled the panels yet (example: I have no master breaker, but 6 subpanel feeds from the service entry, and I have found only 3 subpanels so far, I have no idea what the others go to (and nothing is labeled).
So much fun buying an old house. In fact it’s time to just go turn off the unidentified ones and see if anything quits working.
Oh, this posting would be very long if I told you everything, but most of those will take hiring help to fix (the attic is MUCH too tight for me to pull wire). So I’m trying to map it out and fix what I can.
Better than boredom. Hmmm… that’s a question I think.
The PM mini might be an option but it also needs a Neutral. I’m not sure how old your house is but a lot of these types of devices want a neutral. Looks like the IoTaWatt with power line clamps should do the trick if you can sort out your panels.
I’m looking for outlets, they are always going to have a neutral (they may lack a ground in really old houses). It’s the switches that often don’t have a neutral.
