Industrial automation?

Hi guys. Just wondering if anyone has leveraged hass.io for a more critical environment (such as monitoring a warehouse for temperature and motion). I use a standard setup for my home and love the level of control. But recently I’m helping out a startup which has a small warehouse that does need a level of basic environmental monitoring.

What do you guys do or recommend. Thanks.

I work in industrial automation and can say with 100% certainty that a platform like HA would never work in that type of environment with the level of control, precision, and performance that is demanded and that a real PLC and control system can provide. I’m not knocking HA at all and some might find HA provides a great value given the wide array of assorted hardware it supports. However for the system you describe, I would recommend a dedicated system where its job is to do temperature and motion monitoring and that’s it. I’m thinking of a Honeywell, Tyco, or Simplex system.

Thanks. I thought as much. Was looking for something open source or at least cross platform. As a startup… funds can be a bit tight so don’t want to get locked into a particular ecosystem as yet.

I see this exchange 5 years later and I must disagree.

PLC can stay where they are, it’s not the purpose of HA to replace them. However HA can communicate with PLCs through node red, allowing for complex monitoring and light automation throughout the plant.

It’s very unfortunate that large industrial companies haven’t foreseen this and do ridiculous investment in Node Red and completely ignore Home Assistant. It would have reached by now another level.

I have seen many companies showing off their “digitization software”, and they’re light years away from the level of service & degree of freedom that Home Assistant + Node Red can offer.

The only mandatory thing is to have a company acting as an external service provider. In house engineers would have some flexibility, but for complex projects or for maintenance, as an industrial, I would prefer having a service provider with heavy experience.
