Install options on the RPI (4)

I have tested HA Core in a VMware setup on Ubuntu and now want to install HA on a Raspberry Pi (4). I can think of a few options:

  • Using the Raspberry Pi image (Other specific-purpose OS > Home assistants and home automation > Home Assistant).
  • Installing Ubuntu on the Pi and then setting up HA Core on it.

Which option would be the best choice, and why? What are the advantages of the first option, and what OS does it run on?

I will only use the SD card for booting, while the OS and other data will be on an external SSD.

Thanks

I run HA container on a Pi-4 which is running DietPi which is an optimised minimal Debian OS.

Whilst I run HA Container, DietPi comes with a bunch of scripts to install software including HA.

My feeling tells me to install Ubuntu on the Raspberry Pi and then install HA Core on the RPI. That way, I have the advantage of being able to continue using Ubuntu for reading my P1 and water meter (inverter and doorbell) as well.
