Install smart switch/dimmer modules inside floor lamps

Hi,

I have some floor lamps that are currently controlled through plug-in switches or plug-in dimmers. We rent our place out sometimes and people often mess with the plugs, so I thought it might be a good idea to install a switch/dimmer module inside the lamps instead of using a plug, but all manuals and how-to guide only mention installation of those modules in gang boxes, which makes me think that it could be a dumb idea to begin with.

  1. Are there any reasons why I shouldn’t do it?

  2. All the modules I found require live, neutral and load to go into dedicated connectors. Since it is US plug, I could use the ones that you can’t plug in the wrong way, but out of interest, does anybody know what would happen if somebody manages to plug it in the wrong way? Will it probably or certainly fry the switch/dimmer module?

  3. Anything else I might not be thinking of right now and that I should know about?

Thanks,
Julian
