Sorry, I’m a linux noob, but can follow instructions.
I’ve installed HA on my Windows Server 2019 in a hyper-v. I know that I can’t passthrough USB dongles, so I am now experimenting with using Debian in Hyper-V and installing HA on that. I can install the Debian under Hyper-v, but after I’m done installing it and I reboot the Hyper-v Server, I get a BLACK screen. Also, I don’t know if I’m supposed to select SSH and Terminal (??? sorry, trying to remember from last install) in the Debian Installation.
Regardless, I’ve installed Debian 4 or 5 times and each time they end up Black Screen. There have been a couple times where I could see the GUI, but I know NOTHING about using Debian in a Graphics interface.
Is there something I’m missing? Once I got to the point of installing HA, but I’ve never been able to get back to a screen where I can enter the various commands to install, update or whatever needs to be done.
Windows Server 2019 is running on a Dell R710 computer. I control my server through remote desktop. There is NO monitor on the Server (but I can add one if that’s the issue).
I think most installations of HA on a Linux system will be headless, which means no GUI and only command line administration.
In order to get a headless installation you need to remove the mark at graphical interface when you install Debian.
That is probably not your issue here.
Most likely it is the selection of hardware emaulation in the Hyper-V.
I am not that much into Hyper-V anymore, but I know that SecureBoot can cause issues with Linux, so make sure that is turned off. UEFI boot is fine as long as SecureBoot is off.
I believe I assigned 2048 MB, it is the ONLY VM I’m running, but I have a total of 2, this Home Assistant, and a Home Assistant OS install with 1024MB. I think I made the storage space for Debian 50 GB. The server has 64GB ram. I was reading and read a suggestion that for a LINUX noob, Ubuntu might be better… So, looking at that option, but I only see instructions for Debian and Home Assitant.
Try to raise the ram to 4Gb to see if that helps.
HA should be fine with 2Gb, but integrations can take some too.
In my opinion Debian is the best to run HA on, since HA base their guides on this.
Ubuntu might be better on your VM, but Debian and Ubuntu is based on the same foundation, so it should not be much difference.
Thanks WallyR, I have started a NEW Hyper-V with more Ram and so far no error messages like the last. Now to figure out USB passthrough for My zigbee and Z-wave Dongle… oh alas…
Well, now I’m confused again. I thought I got the VM working, but yesterday, when starting up the server, I get a “Restoring 10%” and it just hangs there. I can’t stop the Virtual Machine in taskbar or through the powershell with Admin rights. I am NOW trying to stop it before it starts so that I can delete this instance and try ONE MORE TIME…
Sounds like you have suspended the VM and not shut it down.
HA might react a bit hard to this since all sensors then needs updated values and tokens might have to be reissued and so on.
