Installing HA on Generic x84-64

Hi
I am interest in installing HA on to an Acer D270 laptop.
I currently use win10.
I downoloaded the image from here,

https://github.com/home-assistant/operating-system/releases/download/15.0/haos_generic-x86-64-15.0.img.xz
I found peazip to unarchive the xz file.
I used BalenaEtcher to flash to usb stick.
and thats when it all goes wrong.
Windows reports a large number of drives to be formatted.
From initial USB Drive E: through to K:
I have tried disk manager to delete the partitions but with the first partition, there is no prompt to delete.
I have used up two flash drives to get this far.
So has anyone else successfully installed this image?
Any ideas greatly appreciated

Wait… you want to install generic HA image INSIDE windows? It doesn’t work that way. Generic HA is standalone installation (like windows, linux…), which means you’d have to completely wipe-out your hard drive, thus deleting windows. The easiest way in this case is (if your HDD is removable) to remove HDD and insert it into external case, then install generic HA image to it with balena etcher, reinsert it and run laptop. But, as said, this way you’ll loose windows.

But if you want to keep Windows then your only option is to install HA inside VM.

Note that Home Assistant is meant to run 24/7 somewhere, so you can reach it with a browser. It has only a limited command line interface on the host machine, it is designed to run without a screen attached. So you 'd have to keep your laptop running 24/7 too.

Many people run the HAOS image you took on a small minicomputer like a NUC, or in a VM on a server. You can use a spare laptop too, but if you want to keep windows you’ll need to run it in a VM.

All recommended install methods are here

For Windows a VM or WSL is recommended
You may also iinstall HAOS which is full OS.

I don’t like windows for 24/7 server and recommend Linux install or HAOS
