Installing HA on Intel NUC

I want to evaluate or compare of two ways on installing HAOs, container and core on an old Zotac NUC . It has an old Intel i7 process with a 128GB SSD .

My current HA server is on a RP4B which I may re-purpose or use as a backup

I believe I have 2 practical options

  1. Option 1 - install it on a linux platform based on this guide (I already set up Armbian on the NUC but there is nothing on it except the OS, so I have happy to wipe it and start again if necessary
  2. Option 2 - is to run an image of HA on the NUC, based on this guide

I think (I could be wrong) is that Option 1 enables me to keep the linux for other application and Option 2 is only HA related.

Any suggestions or recommendation?

A VM on a Linux box is reasonable choice if:

  • you want to host other services that aren’t available as HA add-ons
  • you won’t be using it as an daily driver
  • it has enough cores and memory

A NUC is a good choice for set and forget.

I installed with option 2, over two years ago after multiple failures on pi’s.

Never looked back.

thanks both, I think I shall go for Option 2 , since reliablity of HA server is my primary goal

hi, I took also option to install directly haos on esprimo q920 (I tested before this ubuntu and debian with haos virtualbox vm.
it was some hassle to configure virtualbox, but very stable.
now i’m with option 2 like you say, my goal was to minimise power consumption and fan work-time. well, i don’t see much difference so everyone can choose. choosing first the vm way was the idea of snapshot use in case of bad haos setup, it’s easy peasy to kill a vm and restore the snapshot.
but the ackup mechanism inside haos seems also good

this is a good point too, thank you
