Installing HAOS on raspberry pi 5 with M.2 HAT+ and NVMe SSD

Hi all - first post! I just took delivery of a Raspberry Pi 5 with M.2 HAT+ and NVMe SSD, and before I’ve even started, I realised I can’t see an obvious way to set up HAOS on the SSD. Sure, I could use an SD card, but then how do I set up the SSD at that point.

Once I’m set up, I’ll be restoring the backup from my current Pi 3B running HAOS on an SD card. Can I even just move over the SD card to start with?

Any early pointers would be appreciated

I used a USB NVMe adapter.

OK thanks, I’ll go that way if there are no other options. I think I’d rather put a build on the Pi if I can sort it from there. Let’s see if others have suggestions!

There may be other options, but for me it was very easy.
I uploaded HAOS to an SSD, put it in the Rpi5, and within a few minutes I had a working HA. Then I just used a backup from another HA and that was it.

Boot up on the MicroSD card, then install the OS on the NVME and set the device to boot from there if no MicroSDCard is present. Then turn the RPI off, take the card out, and reboot

Thanks. So do i install haos on the SD, or raspberry pi os? I’m not very familiar with either, or much other than Windows.

Install over the network!

That’s what I did! I think it’s the simplest!

Thanks all, in the end i worked out my issue was using an old usb sd card adaptor, the initial pios image had errors. Once i used a new one i realised how much faster the etcher was able to run, and create a reliable os to work with.

Never of guessed!
