I put HA on an ODROID N2+ and it worked great for a week. I created new automations that were far better than what Insteon allowed for. Now my Insteon Hub has stopped communicating with the network. Can’t ping it nor communicate with it in any way. No luck on reboot nor network reset. so I did a factory reset, and …nothing! Red light is on and no traffic in or out.
Where do I go from here? I have 5 Insteon dimmer switches, 3 relays, 6 door sensors, 2 outdoor lighting controls and 4 lamp controls. That’s 20 devices! I’m hoping that there is something I can do without scrapping a grand worth of equipment.
I just bought a spare brand new Hub today from eBay for $99. So yes, you can get one but do not pay too much. Some are selling for $200+. I bought a spare just in case my Hub stops working like what you described. I’m already on my second Hub. The first Hub failed about 4 years ago. I have over 70 devices in my system. Good luck!
This is what I get for breaking my own rule against buying proprietary equipment. I’ll look into buying a used hub on eBay, but that doesn’t fill me with confidence for the future. This will be my 3rd Hub in 8 years. I have to consider that maybe the prudent thing to do is to begin phasing out all the Insteon equipment over the next year, just for the peace of mind of not worrying about when the next shoe drops. The newer wi-fi and Z-wave gear is less expensive than the Insteon so it won’t cost as much to rebuild as the original build.
Any suggestions for replacing a Insteon In-LineLinc Relay or the hidden door switch?
As a last ditch effort, did you check in your router if the hub is getting an IP address? There could be some DHCP issue or IP conflict with your router for this. Its possible the default IP that is being assigned at startup for the Hub is incompatible with your current router settings. To rule out a network issue, if you have an older router somewhere I would try using that and have just the Home Assistant machine and insteon machine connected to it.
Since the devices are discontinued, you really aren’t left with much choice but to slowly phase them out, since you can’t replace them as they fail. It sounds like this hub was pretty unreliable, and I’ve heard many stories of failure. Even if you get the hub working or find a replacement, I would only consider the Insteon integration with Home Assistant as a temporary solution to buy you some time as you slowly replace these items.
Aeotec makes a zwave one
There are a bunch of options for relays. I have Sonoff minis (zigbee) that are really cheap
The Aeotec hidden switch look good. it will be invisible and fit in the existing hole of the Insteon hidden switch, with only an increase from 1/2" to 3/4". With the Shelly relay I can upgrade my 5 pantry doors for around $300.
Thanks for the advice. It has been extremely helpful
If the red light is on it likely is not dead. It probably has a different IP than you think. Have you used a IP tool to scan the network are look for a device from SmartHome? Look at where it plugs into the network (router, switch) … is that light showing communication?
