Is it possible to get the version number of custom components running in HA?

I’m running a few custom components and would like to know the version number of the currently running custom component, ideally as a sensor.

Is this possible and if so how?

I was tempted to use the custom updater, but it seems it’s not being maintained so I’m not sure how well it will work in the future:

Right now I’m just using hardcoded values within my automations, it’s OK and works when comparing values to the github sensor.
