Is the official Tuya integration in HA dead?

Correct.

There is a fork somewhere that adds support for the Tuya zigbee hub and (at least some of) the devices connected through it, but that is not in the main/hacs linked LocalTuya repo.

Only way I of know is to crack the device open an look at the chip.

Most anything manufactured in the last couple years or so will NOT be compatible. They moved away from ESP chips a while ago. There might be a few exceptions still on ESP.

There is a project out there for Beken chips, which is one of the more prevalent tuya esp replacements.

No. I still having this working on my system.
Based on what others mentioned in this thread and in the info you shared, it is not maintained anymore, what should be sufficient for the recommendations to avoid, but the integration is still working.

When you go to your Tuya integration box under Settings > Devices and Services, do you have any error message? Could you please share it here (please remove any private/sensitive data).

What about your logs under Settings > System > Logs? Anything related to Tuya?

I’m not gonna disagree with others about avoiding Tuya wifi devices specially I’ve reduced those a lot in my home during the past months, however the ones remaining still working in a pretty stable way (I also got an issue a couple of months ago but a workaround was shared here or github in a few hours), so I think you should invest some time on understanding why this is not working for you.

The main reason is that of all the options, it’s the most sensitive to any form of RF interference. Having problems with it refusing to start the mesh because of interference is far more common than on any other coordinator type.

It’s a fine choice - I have one and use it with Zigbee2MQTT

Other Tuya Zigbee devices, yes, though I still wouldn’t recommend buying any, but not WiFi devices.

As mentioned above, Zigbee Tuya devices and Wi-fi Tuya devices are quite different beasts … and my story is about the cheap wi-fi Tuya devices…

A long long time ago … a program TuyaConvert could be used OTA (Over The Air = via wi-fi) to replace the Tuya firmware on the devices with Tasmota firmware, or several other versions including ESPHome. Then about 2 years ago Tuya fixed their firmware to prevent that, while promising to allow local control of Tuya devices. And shortly after products started appearing in stores which use non-ESP chips. Oh, and Tuya quietly changed their mind about local control.

TuyaConvert can still be used now - but you need to open the device and often de-solder the chip it uses, and sometimes to replace it with an ESP equivalent.

Recently a few new options have been developed, still under development, and apparently not yet well known. CloudCutter allows replacing firmware OTA for some of the devices which use BK7231 chips. Also OpenBeken and LibreTuya firmware now supports quite a range of these newer chips used in Tuya devices.
So it looks like we have another window of opportunity to move (at least some of) our devices from Tuya cloud firmware.

Note that ESPHome itself does not support any of the non-ESP chips - but LibreTuya is a fork of ESPHome, so there is a reasonable chance the changes will be merged into official ESPHome.
