Jump directly from 11.5 to 14?

Is it safe to jump directly from OS 11.5 to 14.1? Or should I install 12 first, then 13 and then 14?

I am still on:

  • OS version 11.5
  • core 2024.3.1.
HA on Pi4B with Skyconnect ZHA

Would really appreciate your thoughts.

Pete

To be safe, do step by step. But you can also make a backup and go yolo.

Thanks! So I assume I need to use CLI and update to the latest 12.x which is 12.4. Then test everything and move up to latest 13.x and finally 14.1.

Am I correct?

Would like to add that HA is running on an external USB SSD. I am reading issue #3629 about HAOS 13.2 problems with USB drives. So I am cautious. I don’t have any experience restoring from backup in case of boot drive issues

Hi Peter, cannot add anything for going from OS v 11.5 to 14 but leaving your Core that long without updates is not a good idea.
Every release can have breaking changes and waiting that long to update can result in a lot of unexpected behavior.

I dont think CLI is necessary. Go to settings, system and updates and enable skipped updates.
The updates should be there but remember to do a backup. For restoring just reinstall the image of your old version on the SSD over USB on your PC.
The SSD shouldnt be an issue, at least it wasnt for me

Good call! :+1:
Peter, you find that in the update screen under the 3 dots in the upper right corner.

Thanks all for the advice and heads up.

I read in the io pages that core and OS are independent so that’s reassuring. I will update the core now, thank you @Nick4

Thanks also @JohnFLoki about the tip for skipped updates. I had actually found that myself already, but nothing happens. I think that is because I never actually skipped the updates, I simply never went into the update menus.

So I suppose that only leaves the CLI, which by the way doesn’t looked very complicated. Now I just need to go and find the CLI :joy:

For the CLI use the addon terminal & ssh. But at this point I would just hit update all, because 2024.3 is not that far beyond. If you can update the core maybe try that first to 2024.8 or something.

Thanks for the swift follow up. Actually my concern is not so much with the core, it’s with HAOS, where I’m at 11.5 vs 14.1 current version

Just to say I am the kind of person who tends to update towards the end of the annual update cycle. E.g. I will probably stay on iOS 17 For a while, even though iOS 18 is out now

Yes thats what I meant. Both systems should be backwards compatible, but as closer as they are it is likely to work. I dont know what OS version is the corresponding one to 2024.3, but when you can only update to the latest, maybe 2024.3 is incompatible, but one of the next can be.

Thanks again. I had to read this twice and still here is a check double check question. So if I understand you correctly, you’re warning me that updating the core to the latest version (i.e. 2025.1.1) — even though the manual says core and OS don’t interact — might cause issues because the gulf of time between core 2025 and HAOS 11 may have become too large and there could be compatibility issues?

Edit:
If this is indeed the case, the best approach might be to update HAOS first to say 12.4 and then see if everything still works, before updating the core at all

Yes this could happen, but if you have a backup you can try again and a different approach when it fails.
