Just restored the HA instance to a new hardware and it worked like a charm

Hi all

this is not a request for help. I simply wanted to share my personal experience with moving the HA instance from one hardware (Intel NUC with ProxMox) to another (Dell Laptop).

I’m trying to have HA running on its own hardware not to “depend” anymore by the ProxMox server which I will continue to use for other purposes. For this reason I wanted to move it to its own dedicated machine, even if maybe a laptop is not the best choice. But it was there and I was using it as a client which was always turned on for commodity, so I simply said to myself “why not”. Decided it and made it in less than 30 minutes  , thanks to the extremely good job made by all the developers!!

What I’ve done in case it’s the first experience for somebody is this:

  • Backed up the last status with the GDrive addon
  • Launched the laptop with a live linux distro
  • Installed Balena Etcher
  • Downloaded the generic X64 HASSIO package
  • Installed on laptop’s SSD directly (256gb)
  • Rebooted and waited for the HASSIO instance to come up
  • Connected to the new HA instance via web browser from another computer
  • Restored the backup
  • Waited I’d say a good 30 minutes
  • Up and running exactly as before !!

There’s just 1 little thing I don’t like, but when you get used to it, it’s not an issue anymore, it’s basically the fact that as soon as you click on the Restore button it redirects you to the login page asking you to create a user and you could get confused by that (I did the very first time I made the restore).

But aside of that, it makes me really comfortable to think that in case s**t happens, I can spin up a new and working as before HA instance in minutes !

Thanks guys!! That’s one of the many reasons why I decided to support you with the Nabu Casa subscription

I am wondering to have something similar. I have my production HA running on x86 with HASSIO. And I also have a RPI that I use to run other stuff. In case my HA rund into any problem I would like to restore the backup from HASSIO to the RPI. I tried to but when I copy backup files from HASSIO to the RPI GDrive, RPI does not recognize it. Any guess?
