Key based presence detection

I’m looking for hardware recommendations for an idea.

Whenever i come home i toss my keys into a bowl by my front door. I would like my home to detect if keys are inside this bowl possibly whose keys are inside.

I was thinking of using rfid tags for this but i am not sure whether you can tell if a tag is “present”, or tell apart multiple tags.

I think I saw someone posting a door sensor where the smaller part was on the keys and you just place it on your sensor part.
Pretty clever.

Seen that, looks very cool. its my backup solution, but I’m looking for the specific thing i mentioned.

For a single sensor it would work quite well, using an ESPHome device with a tag reader at the bottom of the bowl, and a long scan interval like 10s. I do not believe multiple tags would work well or at all.

A Bluetooth LE tag however would be able to be read even if there are several of them, and you would then need a reader in proximity to the bowl, not in it.

Esphome does report the id of the rfc tag, but I am not sure what happens if there are two tags in proximity of the sensor.
