This is more about KNX that HA. Background I am a HA user for a few years but recently purchased a property in Portugal that is totally Schneider KNX (prob 8 yrs old). It would appear from my investigation that KNX is a black art and there are very few professional installers (particularly in that area of Portugal).
I have no idea how to get into the KNX configuration I believe I need an expensive piece of software and then no idea if I am capable of understanding or have the bandwidth to do so.
I am hoping to find someone to assist me in setting up and controlling through HA. I am aware I will need a IP interface to achieve this.
Any help/advice/contacts really appreciated. Thanks.
well, it’s at least a very old art.
If you want to connect HA you would at least need to know what GAs (Group addresses) are used for which function in your installation.
If you want to change existing configuration you would need the project file (.knxproj) and the ETS software.
I dont have that - My system obviously has a module with a USB connector. I assume I plug that into my PC, but presumably the software is for programmers and therefore rather expensive? Then there would be a steep learning curve or do I simply need the addresses? But obviously I also need to add the IP module. Apologies I have little knwledge of this.
ETS can use this usb interface to connect. Home Assistant doesn’t support USB, but only IP connection, so you would need an IP interface. You could use an HA addon (Calimero or knxd) to make a bridge from USB to KNX-IP, but I have no experience with that.
ETS Demo is free, but you can only add 5 devices to a Project. You can however use the Group Monitor.
There are other licenses based on how many devices you need. They are from 200 (there are always discounts when you finish a web lesson) for Lite to 1000€ for Professional (no limitations, up to 40% discount from time to time).
Hi Thanks for all your very helpful advice. By the sound of it I need to get an electrician to install an IP interface in the first instance. Is there a specific interface I need - Looking at the Scheider one the model Wiser is over a 1000 Euros?
Having done a little research I think I will need the Home version of ETs, however Is it actually necessary as I only actually need to find the addresses?
To find addresses the free Demo version of ETS would be enough. It would theoretically also suffice to set a device address (individual address) for the interface.
However if you want to change anything, Demo will hit its limits.
That said, not even ETS Professional will serve you any good without the project file.
Schneider Wiser is not only a Interface, but a server, visualization, logic etc device.
Have a look at Weinzierl 732 or Enertex Secure Interface. Or look if you can find used devices.
Here you could get a decent discount for ETS (German unfortunately) In Vorbereitung: Sammelbestellung ETS6-Vollversion Frühjahr 2023 - KNX-User-Forum
Many thanks for your advice. That is very helpful.
Presumably the issue is whether the file is password protected. I assume if it is I am in trouble, or is there a way around that?
I am sure I will have lots more questions once I start
Do you have the file in your possession? The one who created it should be able to tell you the password too.
Other than that, depending on when (which ETS version) it was created with there may be ways to crack that - it’s a zip file. But I never attempted to do so and have no idea how many years that could take
Another option would be to start new, clear all devices and reprogram them 🤷
You may buy a decent book about Knx and ETS if you want to do this on your own. (If the devices themselves are not password protected).
I’m going back there in March and will then attempt to get the file. I have seen some crack programs but guess it may have been created in or around 2012 so should be V5 or even 4. I would really have to go some to start from fresh. Thanks again.
