Landscape lighting - Integration solutions and design

Hi to all,

We are currently doing a complete overhaul of our backyard and landscaping at home. I am currently planning the outdoor lighting and my goal is to integrate it to my Home Assistant system.

I would have different zones, each having their color/behavior difference :

Pool underwater lights (Single color, CCT?)
Ground buried lamps (Single color, CCT?)
Trees projectors (RBGW)
Path lighting (Single color, CCT?)
Deck & stairs (Single color, CCT?)
Pergola (Single color, CCT?)

I am looking to satisfy as much as possible my requirements in a reliable system :

  • Ability to turn off lights easily from a wall switch
  • Ability to control Color/Temperature from a remote/wall panel if Home Assistant interface is not near or as a safety bypass if HA is unoperative
  • Fully supported by Home Assistant
  • Simple solution

After some research and tests on my side, I cam up with the following possible solutions. Each of them has their downside and/or are not fully meeting my requirements.

1- Multiple Magic Home/Tuya controller flashed with ESPHOME + RF Remotes (Need multiple remotes)
2- MiBoxer 5 in 1 (Wifi + RF 2.4Ghz) installed along with a ESP8266 “MilIght” Hub (MQTT+RF) + Wall remote (8 zones)
3- MiBoxer Zigbee 3.0 controller + Wall remote (8 zones)
4- Gledopto zigbee 3.0 + Wall control
5- Other solutions ?

I would love to hear your constructive suggestions and maybe share the projects you did and maybe what you would have changed.

Thanks !

I did something significantly less capable, and built a multi-zone controller using ESPHome and a 4-relay ESP8266 board for the back yard. It simply turns the dumb light zones on and off by closing or opening a relay. There are 8-relay ESP8266 boards available as well.

Thank you for your suggestion but this is somewhat limited and simple

I was hoping for someone to jump in with an elaborated solution ! Let me know !

Did you ever figure something out? I want to do RGB landscape/path lighting, either with a fransformer or plug. The pathway is close to house/basement wall so I can easily dig an electrical line there, or add an additional outlet if necessary. (I also want to install sprinkers over here and would run the electrical to the same spot, so having the electrical in-place would be a bonus)

Did anyone come up with a better answer here? Currently using hue outdoor bollards and spots. They work but are expensive for what they are. Planning to expand to path and driveway where I don’t need color but would like to control on motion. Has anyone found a simple transformer that integrates directly with home assistant?
