Local Deployment for SureFlap / SurePetCare Connect using only local MQTT Broker

@Dottore curious if you have the pics posted for the lifepo4 battery install

Very, very interested in this @heisenberg
It sounds too good to be true

I’m shopping for dual scan cat flaps at this very moment. Is there any news on the progress?

Also, is it a startup or existing brand? Do they ship US or EUR?

If they are open for use with a local API they will be open for an open-source integration, right? Can we help code, do you have a repo on GitHub to help things along?

Standard zigbee catflap would be awesome.

If this is really going to work locally in Home Assistant and if it becomes available in The Netherlands, it will be an INSTANT BUY !!!

Provided it is somewhat bigger than the ‘regular’ cat flaps from Sure Petcare, since we now also use the bigger ‘Pet door’. And it would be even nicer if the fit in the cut-out is 1:1

Our current ‘pet door’ from Sure Petcare is from 2018-2019, but even despite it’s rediculously high price, it is also already falling apart (only one ‘catch’ on the inside of the flap working…) .

OH and I’ll definitely spam the hell out of every possibility where I can post reviews of Sure Petcare flaps, that a much better, ‘open’ and friendly alternative now is available

Hi Heisenberg, is there any news on the flap. The Surepet integration is now really broken because they decided to ditch the current web app…

Yes, I realised the Surepet integration stopped working some days ago, this is completely unacceptable, but hopefully we will have a better solution soon…

I have good news again, I have talked to the company that sent me the catflap to help them build the HA integration, and they are happy for me to share their information with you guys, so here we go!

The name of the company is OnlyCat, and their catflap is better than the Surepet catflap in almost every aspect (you can have a look at their website). They have a waiting list to order their catflap and they are working hard to fulfil those backorders and also improve their app, so they haven´t got a chance to work on the HA integration yet, but it should happen pretty soon.

They have a facebook group where they post updates and news about their development, feel free to join the group if you want to be in the loop: Redirecting...

As I just mentioned, I think their catflap is better than the surepet one in almost every aspect, but I think it wouldn´t be fare if I didn´t mention the cons as well. In my opinion, the only cons are price (as it´s more expensive than surepet, obviously due to the camera with AI and extra functionality) and maybe I would add the need for usb power instead of being battery powered (but to be honest, I´m happy with that, as it removes the need of replacing batteries all the time). For me these cons are totally outweighed by the advantages like the local control without the need for a hub and the integration with HA (not to mention the camera with AI that locks the door automatically when the cat is trying to bring the dinner to the house).

As I mentioned before, this looks really promissing. I´ll keep you guys posted about the HA integration, and will ask for help if I needed, but the first step if for OnlyCat to build the local MQTT client in the catflap so it can communicate with HA using MQTT.

Thank you for getting back to us, I was starting to think it was forgotten about.

I do see a major problem with that picture of the OnlyCat catflap though.
One of the reasons we need a different cat flap is that one of our cats can is able to stand on the inside locking mechanism with one foot, then open up the flap by hooking her claw to the side of the flap an pulling it towards herself, opening the flap.
If the inside hook mechanism was like on the outside (two hooks) that would no longer be a problem.

We might want to branch out to a dedicated topic for the OnlyCat catflap to not use and flood this SureFlap/SurePetCare topic anymore.

I just got a reply from OnlyCat, and they want to start building a developer community to help with the development of the local integration with HA. They asked me for suggestions about the best approach (a second Facebook group for developers, a Discord channel, etc.). I don´t want to hijack this topic either, but does anyone have a strong reason to choose any specific communication channel?

only my 2 cents but if your developing something for the users of HA wouldn’t it be best to have it at the heart of those people and as interest grows within wouldn’t your feed back also grow

i know if im looking for a cat door that works HA ill look here not on FB or any other place

Same, I don’t have Facebook.

I guess the smart move would be that someone will set up a GitHub repository to start building a HACS integration. If the GitHub Discussions are enabled for that repo I guess that would be a good place to communicate?

I mentioned the option to create a GitHub repo to them, and guess what, they inmediatelly created one (with Discussions enabled): GitHub - OnlyCatAI/onlycat-home-assistant

I just love to see companies with this spirit!

I think also discord is the way to go to , maybe a separate channel

I’d suggest a new OnlyCat thread here too.

I just ordered an OnlyCat cat-flap, mainly because of it’s mention here in this thread, ande hope of HA-integration. So when I get that (and the cat) I will at least be able to help with testing.

When are you going to start develop the code?

Why is that catflap so expensive? 480€ ? Is it made from gold? I also see they offer 1 size only :-(. I have now the bigger pet door version

Wow… that is expensive… Plus the design is almost the same as the Surepet one, so I doubt if it would perform better when detecting cats from the inside.

I’ll skip this one and might start experimenting on making my own.

I have made several integrations in Home Assistant, so let me know if I can help with anything.

Oh that would be awesome!

I have just created a topic for this integration with OnlyCat catflap, let´s continue the discussion there (I think you will like the first message I wrote there with some exciting news…): Home Assistant integration for OnlyCat catflap
