Local goes down?

I am kinda confused about something. Bear with my lack of networking knowledge, also I may just have a setting wrong. Why is it that when my internet goes down, I can no longer access my Home Assistant from the local IP? Router and modem are my own, not ISPs. I can access other devices. I was under the impression that I was still supposed to be able to access home assistant and use my automations for local run devices when my net goes out?

What address are you using to access Home Assistant?

The IP address should always work, even without internet.

That was what I used but it still didn’t connect. It said refused to connect.

Be specific. What is that? What did you type into the URL on the browser?

I used the IP address to my pi. I had hit reply on his post, so I thought it would be specific, my b. 192.168.x.x:8123

“local” implies that you are using mDNS, for example “homeassistant.local”. You are using an IP address. By the way, obfuscating a private network IP (x.x) is needless since no one not connected to your private network can access it.

As tom_l says, the IP of your Home Assistant will work whether you have internet or not. Unless maybe you are running Home Assistant Cloud?

The first thing you should do is to ping the Home Assistant server.
Probably the next question is what are you running Home Assistant on and how did you install it?

Thank you for the quick lesson. I did attempt local as well as by ip.

I am in fact using cloud, I was under the impression that when cloud wasn’t accessible I should still be able to access via the ip address? Does being able to access my setup via cloud stop me from being able to access via IP if cloud goes down?
Running HAOS on a Pi 4 4 GB via Balena Etcher.

With what are you connecting? The companion app or browser? The app has separate settings for internal and external access and mostly does the right thing when configured correctly.

Browser. I’m aware of the settings in the companion app. For some reason my internal settings are grayed out, so when I want to use IP I just use the browser.

Interesting. I just cut the net myself and tested it out and was able to access everything. Now I’m even more confused. During the internet outage I wasn’t able to access, but when the net was unplugged manually I was.

Since I don’t use the cloud, I am the wrong person to be answering you.

Perhaps the previous outage caused by your router crashing rather than loss of connection by your ISP.

I checked the ISP app and it was def the ISP in outage.

Are you connecting from a phone? My Samsung will switch to LTE when the WiFi has no internet, I can’t connect to anything local unless I disable that setting under advanced WiFi.

That was where I tried from since I was in bed. I bet that’s the issue there. I’ll test here shortly. This makes a ton of sense.
