Need possibility to attach another local disk just for specific directory (Backup/Media/Share), not moving the full system. Similar to the Network storage option (maybe it can be extended easily)
Hi Nándor Izer,
There is no supported way to connect a second drive directly. You need to consider one of the supported methods.
Mounting drives can VERY much break your system. If the drive mounted brings the backup size bigger than available, for instance, the drive will fill up and the system will crash. If you plug in a memory stick, for instance, with malware, that would cause all kinds of problems.
That is why this is not supported and if you do find a way to do it, you will be using an unsupported version of HAOS and you will be on your own when it breaks. It is absolutely not recommended behavior, however it is not impossible to do.
Plus if you really want a drive mounted, install core or another install method where you are in control of the OS.
Clear up storage - Home Assistant.
Common tasks - Operating System - Home Assistant.
Using the supported Samba Add-on is the supported and much safer way to transfer files. You can also use one of the SSH Terminal Add-ons to do this.
Hello,
I understand your security conserns, but from that point of view, what’s the different between mounting an instable network share or a permanent and dedicated local drive (not share used memory sticks)?
OK, backup is a acceptable reason, but the mentioned specific folders can be excluded.
The main advantage of using another drive (or partition) for especially Media and/or Share is that they can’t fill up the system drive and crash the system.
Arguing with me doesn’t change anything.
I’m providing facts. and what I believe are the reasons behind the facts.
You may not have read my answer carefully enough, however, based on your response.
Hello @Sir_Goodenough,
Thank you for clearing that up. This is a feature were I also was hoping to be realised.
I understand that there is a supported way to accomplish this when running own OS.
I am running currently Debian12 and mounted my second drive.
Could you provide a guide on how to make the second drive usable within HASS?
My main goal is to use the second drive for all my media files. No need to back those up
So I assume Supervised install?
If so you have to mount the drive in the container, but you have the same problem. If you ever forget and HA tries to back up that drive where it’s mapped with the rest of the main drive, it will at worse case overfill your HA and crash it out of space and at best case you will have a huge backup.
Yes, I have a 8T plex drive mapped in mine and the main is a 1T SSD, I have crashed my stuff twice because of it. I cannot be responsible on helping anyone with this. There are threads out there that tell you how, so search. I’m not going to be the one to tell anyone where they are. I usually don’t tell people that they exist beyond the carefully crafted vague references in my pre-canned message above (that few pick up on…).
I hope you can understand why.
