Location tracking for running / biking / etc. Like Strava or RunKeeper, but private

I stopped using Strava a year or two ago because I didn’t like some of the changes in the privacy policy. Recently, I was out cycling, and while riding, I thought about how much I enjoyed the aspects of Strava where I could compare my rides against previous years, or when I rode the same segments last week, or whatever. I thought about how it would be awesome to have a more privacy-focused way of tracking how much distance I was covering and data about my rides.

Home Assistant is already tracking my location privately, so what about a potential feature for the companion apps that could enable you to easily start and end periods of High Accuracy Mode tracking, and keep track of some key data points like total distance, time, type of activity, etc. about those periods between the start and end timestamps?.

I’m sure, given some time, the community could flesh out the requirements for such a feature in terms of what Home Assistant is already doing for us. Anybody else have thoughts about this? Is anybody else wary of third party apps that track your location, and their impacts on personal privacy?

Hey

I’m using Opentracks that is perfect for that  It’s fully local and each exercise is recorded in a file in a standard format (on my phone it’s backuped automatically on my nextcloud).
https://opentracksapp.com/ it’s avalaible in Frdroid

Traccar allows you to use a personal server.

Opentracks seems cool, but I was hoping to have only one app tracking my location and store it for me. HA already syncs location data with my home server and maps it for me.

It seems like all that would be required at minimum would be to turn on high accuracy mode and record the start and stop times to be able to show the location points only within those times.

unhappy it’s impossible as you have absolutely no control on when phone/mobile device decides to be in high accuracy mode or not :frowning:

Oh, yeah, I just read about some of the bugs related to the High Accuracy mode. That sucks.
