Locks which support Home Assistant and Apple Home Key

This isn’t a question, just info sharing. I have spent so much time reading forums and trying to find a lock that supports Apple Home Key and Home Assistant without any OEM bridges or cloud, which would be unacceptable additions to my home.

I have discovered only three: the Aqara U300[1], the Aqara U200 (but I don’t like retrofit locks), and the Yale Assure Lock 2 Plus.

Yes, the Assure Lock 2 Plus is compatible with Yale’s Z-Wave AYR-MOD-ZW3 smart module, which gives you Z-wave S2 connectivity while remaining able to connect to HomeKit separately via the lock’s native Bluetooth, which is necessary for Home Key.

These modules are readily available on eBay, and mine has the (latest?) firmware V2.40.0. I’ve heard mixed reviews about older firmware with Z-Wave JS so YMMV, but I wouldn’t risk it. V2.40.0 definitely works. The older ZW2 module is S0 security so it makes no sense to put in a lock.

If you buy the Assure Lock 2 Plus you should buy the Bluetooth version, like the ones sold in the Apple Store. The Wi-Fi version is the same lock, but with a Wi-Fi module that you would have to replace with the Z-wave one, so it’s a waste. Then just add an AYR-MOD-ZW3 and you’re golden.

I have seen a handful of people in various forums mention wanting to try this configuration, but I could not find a single soul who could confirm it worked. So now I’m confirming it here, and maybe this will show up in some search results and save someone the few hours I spent researching this last night

  1. which is nice, but I only have one door I can realistically use it on because it is not a deadbolt. I really hope Aqara makes a new version of the U100 with Matter over Thread in the future. ↩︎

I’ve had an awful time with the ZW2 Module. Any place other than Ebay one-offs to buy these at a reasonable cost?

You might look into Level Lock Pro which supports Apple homekey and matter which both Apple and HA can use. I am hesitant to wholeheartedly recommend the company because they are not awesome on supporting products but they certainly look good vs the “robot panel” look of many smart locks. I own 1 level bolt and 1 level touch.
