Long narrow water leak sensor?

I want to make (or buy if anyone can recommend it!) a little diy water leak sensor - the unique characteristic being that the area I want to monitor for leaks is along my basement wall, where the problem area is about 4 feet long. Sometimes we get as little as a few drips on the floor, but I’d like a sensor to trigger for basically any wet contact along the length of the wall.

I am good with building little esp sensors and basic electronics, but I wonder if anyone has done this before? All I’ve found to buy are little spot sensors meant to detect water contact in a single spot, not along a line.

Search for “leak detection cable”.
e.g.

or

They are basically separated conductors wound around a non conducive core. So you could detect water between the conductors with either resistive or capacitive ESPHome components. e.g. the touch pad component.

Got it. So it’s something I can buy. Excellent, thanks!

I was then motivated to scour AliExpress and turned up a couple of different products and have ordered a 5m length of this: https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256805267038725.html

I’ll report back how it goes…
