I’m new to home automation and trying to learn the hardware options.
I’m looking for a way to slide a window in one direction (for opening) or the reverse (for closing). The idea is to automate the opening and closing of a window door, so it can be scheduled in advance or triggered by some event.
I was thinking about having something like a small powered wheel or a motorized car that are attached to the sliding door from the front, and controlled by RF. So when the wheel/car move forward/backward they move the door with them. There’s some space (like 10cm) where the wheel/car can be positioned:
However, i’m not sure the car would be powerful enough to move the window, and anyway I need two for the two doors of the window and this gets a little pricey.
Look up linear actuators as that is probably the best option. You can get screw driven ones that are small but have enough torque to slide something like that open.
Has anyone else done something like this? It’s something I’d really like to try, and I’d love to hear more practical experience. Drr Zzs did a great video, btw, thanks for posting!
I have been searching for exactly the same thing, even contacting companies overseas.
I have 2 windows that face West and if left open the rain will come in.
In desperation, I added a sensor to each window to indicate if it is left open with the intent of being able to check if rain is threatening.
I spoke to a bloke who works with CNC machines and he assured me that using an Arduino and a screw thread a window automation system can be built, but that means learning how to use Arduino and accessing parts…
Its been a long drawn out and fruitless process for me. The Dr ZZZ you tube clip may be the simplest system I have seen. I will have a thorough look at it later to see if it suits me…
I will be keeping an eye on this page to see if anyone has any simpler workable ideas.
