Looking for a way to make my diesel heater Y-ducting 'smart'

Hi All,

I’m controlling my chinese diesel heater over mqtt with the afterburner. In my boat i have 3 adjustable Y-ductings. Since i’m a live-aboard i’m having a lot of interaction with the control knobs. (closing the airflow to the main cabin and fully opening the airflow to the berth when going to bed).

Anybody ever tried to add a actuator to these knobs ? would be awesome if i can control the aperture over mqtt. Suggestions would be very welcome

How about something like this:

I’m looking to do the same kind of thing, and the device CaptTom mentioned was one of the only things I found. There are a few mega-expensive proper HVAC components but I was surprised to find so few cheap solutions.

I have also found that you can buy the actuators separately, and I did wonder about buying one of the manual Y shapes you have and trying to fit actuators on the existing knobs? The only downer for me about these actuators is that they seem to be binary - so just open or closed. When I think about that, it makes sense because at any other setting, they would require an ongoing force to keep them in place or some complex ratchet system! Anyway, you may not need partial settings and I’m actually not sure I do - but it felt like a good idea :-

I’m going to keep searching out solutions, because I want to automagically balance the heat distribution and air recycling option on my diesel heater system. I’m going to try and control it with a PID - so I’m looking forward to trying to set that up with multiple graduated outputs :grimacing: I’ll post back on here if I find better solutions to this auto airflow control issue and perhaps you could do the same? It’s become a bit of a ‘hobby horse’ for me just now and I’m like a dog with a bone trying to suss it out!

Hi Pedroespecial,

I’ve finished up yesterday. Added servo’s to the knob that are controlled by a Wemos D1.image

I can adjust the flaps in 180 steps from open to close

Still work good? What servo? How you mount?
