I’m wondering if there’s a simple (and small) multicolor LED that can be dimmed and set to different colors to show state information.
Ideally this would be zigbee but if there’s other methods I’d be open to checking.

I’ve been looking for something similar for a long time.
Some people will recommend other devices that have led indicators that you can configure independently of switch state… but that wouldn’t work for my use case… so I made my own.
I bought a 8x8 WLED panel, and a power adapter and a wemos D1 board and I run the WLED integration. I jammed it all in deep shadowbox 4x4 picture frame and now I have a small configurable notification light/nightlight/mood light. Lots of form factors for the LEDs and you can fit them in lots of housings.
