My Linear NGDZ00-4 zwave Garage Door opener finally died. It was the last thing I had connected to my smarthings hub. I am wanting to stop using the smarthings hub and just use Home Assistant which I really like. Looking for recommendations on a really well supported model.
I have a Chamberlain MyQ controller paired with my old Craftsman opener and I’ve found it to be quite solid. I control it via the Home Assistant API using the Flic app and buttons, and via HomeKit for Siri and automation based on iCloud presence.
MyQ works I guess but requires third party server and goes down when internet has issue or server issue on their end.
Look for barebones opener and save the money(if there is some cost difference). By barebones I mean one that has a simple up/down button and not a smart opener or anything like that. The basic button can be wired to a simple WiFi switch like sonoff or esp8266 and used in HA. The smart opener require you wire the remote opener into switch(works good but less elegant)
The smart opener usually have Light Switch on the up/down button that goes in garage
Well I was able to repair my Linear NGDZ00-4 zwave Garage Door opener by completely resetting it. I still don’t trust it as in the past I’ve had to power cycle it many times to get it working again. But it is still tied to my smarthings hub and I am wanting to do away with it. I do like having the option for local control and not having to be tied to cloud based services. I have watched several YouTube video on Wi-Fi solutions, I am still not sure what I am going to do. I really do appreciate all the suggestions.
Yeah it could be Smarthings. Since the Linear NGDZ00-4 zwave Garage Door opener is not supported without having to make changes to the HA zwave. I may take another look at it. I am currently using this docker inside my unraid system. https://registry.hub.docker.com/u/homeassistant/home-assistant/ which works great! I don’t know how the suggested changes would effect it.
@Flamez what did you decide to do? SmartThings messed up two day ago and broke devices for a lot of folks. My GD00Z-4 went offline and refuses to return. This is the only device keeping me tied to ST so I am ready to drop them and move to something else.
I am strongly considering building my own Opener using a Raspberry Pi.
This way I have full control over it and I don’t have to hack HA to make the linear work.
Well I went with the MyQ garage door opener for now as I found an open box sale and got it for a good price. I have it working just fine. In the future I will probably plan on building my own as to not have to be tied to the cloud. My GD00Z-4 never worked again. I was also finally able to drop smarthings!
This was the trigger that is letting me drop SmartThings Finally. I was moving over a few devices at a time but when they killed my GD00Z-4 two days ago I started moving everything over fast. Good riddance SmartThings !
