Making a cheap rack PDU smart by adding Shelly or Qubino relays

Hi, I am planing on making a cheap rack PDU smart by adding one or more Shelly or Qubino relays to it. I have done that with regular power strips before (the 12 outlet Amazon Basic one has room for two Shellys) but never to a rackmount one. Has anybody done this before and knows a make and model that would have enough room to house the relays?

Thanks,
Julian

Keep in mind that the rack might be functioning as a Faraday cage. So test the wireless reception inside first. For the rest I can’t help you. My Gembird pdu does is far too slim for this.

Good point. I just tested that with a 240lbs / 100kg tool chest made of massive steel and both 2.4GHz wifi as well as zwave reception inside is pretty good. Pings to the shelly are 15ms avg and both wifi and zwave switch without any noticeable delay. The rack is open anway and the PDU housing is definitely thinner than that of the tool chest, which is 1.4mm

Guess I am going to try with a CyperPower basic model. There should be enough room inside, judging from the amazon pictures:

There is definitely enough room in this thing  The actual outlets are paired, so it’ll always switch two at a time, but I don’t mind that.
