My stereo only has one speaker outlet but I have speakers in two rooms. If I wanna listen to music in both rooms, it’s always gonna be the same music, however sometimes I want to disable room A or B. So my goal is to have the signal S from the amplifier sent to either A, B, or AB.
Can this be achieved with two simple relays?
Any suggestions on a cheap Zigbee relay board suitable for the job?
EDIT: It’s stereo so I might have to use four relays. Or maybe transistors would do the job too? Or is there a pre-built device for the job?
Can your amplifier drive 4 Ohm loads?
Are your speakers 8 Ohm?
If so it’s a fairly simple switch arrangement.
2x DPST relays should do it:
Thanks for your awesome reply! While your answer per se is very clear, I’m confused by my speaker system with regards to the impedance. The equipment I have gathered is:
- 2x Jamo SW300 subwoofer
- 4x Jamo SAT300 satellite speakers
The idea is that 4 cables (L± and R±) go into each subwoofer. Then two satellite speaker are connected to each subwoofer as well. Here’s a picture I found on the web (not the same SUB but the same way to connect it):
So the connections per group are 2 speakers in parallel connected in series to 1 amp, and I got 2 groups parallel. On each subwoofer and on each speaker, it says “Impedance 8 Ohm”.
The “amp of my dreams” is the SONOS Amp. The specs are as follows (from the SONOS site):
Speaker impedance | Watts per channel |
---|---|
8 Ohms | 125 Watts |
6 Ohms | 187.5 Watts |
4 Ohms | 250 Watts |
So theoretically this could work but I’m not sure it SUB+SAT still results in 8 Ohm or if it adds up to 4.
No idea, sorry. If you buy 2x Sonos amps you won’t need to worry about the switching relays. Or if that’s too expensive get a Yamaha RX-V685 or similar. They have two zones and integrate well with home assistant.
This is one amp:
Thanks again! I’ll have a look at the Yamaha. It could still be SONOSified by using a SONOS connect. Might be at much better financial conditions than two SONOS Amps.
Depending on your preferred streaming source you may not need the Sonos at all.
I’m already a victim of vendor lock-in because I bought IKEA SYMFONISK. Since the SAT300 speakers will be in a room directly besides a room powered by SYMFONISK speakers, there is no tolerance for delays, the sound must be perfeclty synchronized or it sounds like hell.
