Media_Player entities all of sudden missing

I have the same issues.
Things I have noticed:

  • I am on the experimental firmware of Google Home1.42.180518
  • When manually adding the IP adresses of the cast devices they are found and can be used
  • When looking up the details about the devices Hass does not recognise the manufacturer nor the type
  • Using Hass.io 0.101.2
  • When starting fresh, Hass does discover Cast devices. When I then enable it it says no Cast devices are found

I’m on hassio 0.101.2. I had the same issue when I was on 0.100.3.

I’m not sure how to check my version of google home. Is that in the Android Google Home app? If so, that is app version 2.15.1.21.

Click on a Google Home device in the Google Home app
Then click on the settings (cogwheel top right on Android)
(Only works locally)

There you should see the firmware version at the bottom of that section

For me these problems started after app version 2.15 and the new firmware 1.42.180518
Google says it’s not really experimental firmware, but more as a pre-release firmware. It’s not beta

Could it be the rebranding from Google Home to Nest that was done in this in this firmware???

Yep, looks like I’m on firmware 1.42.180518 as well.

At least there is a work around.

This doesn’t appear to work for google cast groups.

Looks like the issue (at least for me) is specific to folks using Google’s mesh routers - see here. Apparently a recent firmware update bricked the pucks’ ability to forward the multicast DNS records of each cast device between each other. The workaround is to disable all but a single puck, so that all cast devices (and HA) are connected to the same router, but it sounds like a firmware fix is on the way.

I also use Google mesh WiFi. Thanks for the update!
