Migration, Pi to NAS

Looking for help on VM’s, Containers, Docker-ish approaches to HA.

Currently runnin the simple pi4 config, with a Nortek dual stick. Moving to a NAS that supports VM’s and such. Eventually extending HA with surveillance, through the NAS as well. The replacement NAS is also going to be a large photo repository. And QNAP is becoming the platform I’m leaning towards.

For now, I am looking for your best recommendations on how to migrate what I have. I have never managed servers and in-home hosted apps to this degree. But I’ll read, follow, and learn just about anything. I’m hoping to avoid reading everything though.

Anyone knowledgable in making a HA friend in the process, lets set up a video call and swap learnings. I’m happy to sponsor cups of coffee (or whatever) to make it worth your while.

What installation method did you use on the Pi4? If Home Assistant Operating System or Home Assistant Supervised you can simply download a backup, install Home Assistant Operating System or Home Assistant Supervised and restore.

Last week I moved from a VM environment to bare metal (both Home Assistant Operating System) and everything came back without any hiccups* after the backup/restore process was used. Ive done this a number of times in the past and all the transitions have been smooth.

If not going to and from Home Assistant Operating System or Home Assistant Supervised it may be a more manual endeavor.

*there was one small issue in that it is not very clear when the restore was started/finished. A new request to the HA front end reveled it had finished and I just needed to log in with my existing credentials.

Docker is easy once you get the basics
