Minimal/reasonable Zigbee controller to run Tradfri?

Hi,

I have quite a few Zwave devices and am running HA on an ODroid. I have never played with Zigbee before.

I have just bought an apartment and the previous owner left a few Ikea Tradfri lights, paired with just their remotes and not centralised in any way. I am thinking of a sensible way to bring that into HA. Not necessarily the cheapest, but something that could be made use of in some wider way later.

I do not own a Tradfri gateway. Are the Tradfri lights basically standard Zigbee devices that can be controlled directly via a ZigBee controller, or do I need to but the Tradfri gateway and (possibly?) some Zigbee controller?

What’s a good controller to get in any case? I also see that there is talk of moving Zigbee to Threat/Matter over the next years. Are we close enough to that that some controllers are supposed to be compatible given firmware upgrades?

If it makes any difference to recommendations, I am in the EU.

Not at all. Any Zigbee stick will do.
