More compact dashboard with section view

Hi everyone!

The last couple of days I’ve read the blog article about section view, played around with it, and really, really appreciate it. In fact, I appreciate it so much that I do not want to go back to the older layouts.

I think I also understand the design decisions made, BUT there is one thing I really don’t like: on a larger screen there is too much space between sections because of the “Z Grid” design:

I tried the “put sections closer” (?) option, but this does not change anything:

Question: Is it possible to keep the section view with a more compact “Z Masonary” like design?

Thanks a lot for your ideas!

Yes. Go back to using a Masonry view type

Or just pay particular attention to the way you lay out cards. Cards of a similar height (or sections of multiple cards) at the top of each row.

Ok. Sure. But than I cannot group tiles within sections…

What does “Dichte Abschnittsplatzierung” option do?

That only has an effect once you start playing with multi-column sections, it will reorder the sections to promote a 1-column section before a 2-column section if your row has 1 empty column left.

You can also make full horizontal width sections.

Just found out you can have multiple headings in the same section. This helped me greatly reduce the blank space I have in my dashboards.

Here is an example: These were two different sections before, and they had a lot of empty space. I just dragged the heading and all the buttons from on section to he other keeping the same structure and order. Now it is much more compact on desktop, but still exactly the same on mobile.

Thanks a lot for all your great ideas!

For me, I decided to use two different dashboards: one with a sections view for small items like switches, etc., and one with traditional masonry design for larger items like info cards and the like.

But still, if I had a wish, it was for a more compact section view layout without much free space in between the different items.

Best wishes
